The relation between ADT or hormonal therapy, and cognitive function is a subject that has been studied. Some studies suggest a possible link while others do not. Further studies are needed , however it is important to start by clarifying that hormonal therapy does not cause Alzheimer’s disease.
It is also important to point out that symptoms relating to cognition are not side effects that will occur, but rather side effects that may occur. When you’re told that you have prostate cancer or that your prostate cancer has returned, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. Often, you have been given a list of medical appointments and tests. You are learning about new medications, treatments and side effects.
You may already be receiving ADT which can result in you feeling down, experiencing fatigue and/or hot flashes. Psychologically you are going through a lot. In these situations, it’s normal to feel that you are having a harder time focussing and that you are more forgetful than normal. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to minimize the impact.
First and foremost, focussing on your psychological well being is of great help. It’s helpful to involve your partner or loved ones so they can support you. Have your partner attend a couple of your appointments with you to learn about ADT. Working as a team will help you and your partner feel empowered and will help you successfully navigate through your treatment.
Also, keep in mind that you have a medical team available to accompany you through this journey. It’s very important to have open lines of communication with your physician about any mental or emotional changes you feel. The more information you provide them, the better they can help you with the necessary support. Many centers provide access to psychologists, councillors, sexologists, nurses and
other health care professionals if needed. You should not feel uncomfortable asking for such help if you or your partner has noticed a change in your cognitive abilities.
Finally, exercise, good sleep and a balanced healthy diet are vitally important. Collectively, these have a big impact on well-being and therefore indirectly on your cognitive function. Ask your physician about how much exercise is safe for you and consider using a personal trainer to help you set up an exercise routine that’s achievable and that suits your needs.

Finally, always remember, you should not feel as if you are going through this journey alone. If you are on ADT and feel your cognitive abilities are being affected, don’t be afraid to talk to your partner or loved ones about it, and crucially, make sure you speak to your physician or health care team about what you’re experiencing.
